The EAGLE Gallery

A collection of items named EAGLE

Welcome to the "EAGLE Gallery". This is the place where we have put together a collection of items that all have one thing in common: they are all named after that majestic bird of prey Eagle.

I'm Klaus Schmidinger, and I will be your host on this interesting tour through the world of EAGLE. The name Eagle is very popular, and over the years many things have been given this name. You may most likely have already seen some of the exhibits presented in this gallery. But I'm sure you will be amazed how many things out there bear this name - things you've probably never heard of before!

Now please follow me on a guided tour through the "EAGLE Gallery". If at any place you have a question, please don't hesitate to ask! Oh, and, by the way: please No Smoking on this web page!

The American Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus).

Isn't he beautiful?
This bird truly is the "King of the Sky". For quite a while the American Bald Eagle has been on the list of endangered species, and only recently has it been taken off that list. This means that there is now a sufficient number of these birds to allow for the survival of this species.

Let's all hope that this never happens again, and that the generations that come after us will still be able to admire this wonderful part of God's creation.

More pictures of Bald Eagles can be found at Eagle Stock Images or at Rainbow Productions.

The Eagle View golf course is located just off of a military base in midwest USA. So named because of a couple pairs of nesting Bald Eagles that reside on one of the lakes.

ALEXANDER EAGLEROCK
MODEL A-14
NC205Y

The Alexander Airplane Company built 893 Eaglerock aircraft in Englewood and then in Colorado Springs between 1926 and 1932. During that time more aircraft were built in Colorado than anywhere in the world. This airplane from its construction in 1930 to the early 1940's carried mail and passengers from Rapid City, S.D. Eaglerocks were popular throughout the United States and many foreign countries. They were used as photographic platforms and crop sprayers, for barnstorming and even competitive air racing. Members of the Antique Airplane Association of Colorado and bayport, N.Y., restored NC205Y over 25 years, ending in 1989. This gift to the City & County of Denver honors the pioneering spirit of the West during the Golden Era of Aviation.

The Eagle Valley Enterprise is the official statutory newspaper of Eagle County, Colorado.

Here are two articles from page 2 of the July 23, 1998 edition:

Rash of fender-benders concerns Eagle cops

A fistful of non-injury accidents in two weeks won't raise an eyebrow in Grand Junction, or even Glenwood Springs. But it's a lot for Eagle, and local police are concerned.
Eagle police officer Jerry Beers reports that he and his fellow officers have had to handle "four or five" non-injury accidents of various severity since July 8.
Most, said Beers, have been caused by people getting impatient at intersections or not paying enough attention while backing out of driveways.
"We're just dealing with a large traffic volume right now," said Beers, "and the (road) designs weren't meant to handle 'em."
"People need to take their time and really pay attention."

Drunk-driving suspect makes many mistakes

A man Eagle police arrested for Driving Under the Influence Sunday night made several mistakes.
First, officer Mark Vodopich clocked the man's car going west on Grand Avenue at 61 mph in a 35 mph zone.
We should all be able to recite what happened next: "The officer contacted the subject, and noticed he had bloodshot eyes. He also detected a strong odor of alcohol on his breath. The subject was asked to get out of his vehicle and perform roadside maneuvers. He was unable to complete the roadside maneuvers and was then placed under arrest for DUI and taken to the Eagle County jail."
In Addition to DUI, the suspect was also charged with speeding, no proof of insurance and driving with a cancelled driver's license.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning Eagle-Tribune is one of the few local, family-owned newspapers still publishing in America, and its owners continue to believe that readers are better served by neighbors than by corporate policy. Published seven days a week, it serves 26 communities in northern Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire in an area called the Merrimack Valley, once famed for its textile mills and now known for its mix of electronic and other industries, adaptable cities and rural New England flavor.

Way up north in Michigan's Upper Peninsula there is a town named Eagle River and another named Eagle Harbor. Eagle River is a very small town and it is situated where the Eagle River opens into Lake Superior. Eagle Harbor is not much bigger but it has a nice bay (also called Eagle Harbor) and a lighthouse which is still operating (it has been automated by the Coast Guard) to guide the freight ships around the Keweenaw Peninsula.

February 6, 1898, the Fraternal Order of Eagles was founded by six theater owners in a Seattle waterfront shipyard (John Cort, John Considine, T.J. Considine, Mose Goldsmith, H.L. Leavitt, and Melvin Winstock). The Fraternal Order, then called the Order of Good Things, not only welcomed the average man as a member, but fought for his right to a life of dignity and self-respect. By 1908, 1,871 Eagle Clubs were chartered. Introduction of Auxiliaries were started in 1927.
It was the Eagles who started Mother's Day, who provided the impetus for social security, who pushed for old age pensions and Medicare, and who ended job discrimination based on age.

The Eagle Nebula is a giant HII region like the Orion Nebula. The name comes about because the hydrogen atoms in such a cloud have been mostly ripped apart (ionized) by ultraviolet starlight, and a standard designation for ionized hydrogen is HII (HI being the neutral hydrogen). As is usually the case, this is a site of continuing star formation.

Last but not least here's the EAGLE Layout Editor from CadSoft. There's a funny story about how we came up with the name EAGLE: after Rudi Hofer and I decided to turn our program into a commercial product, we had to give it a name. So one day Rudi, his wife Gisela and myself were sitting together, thinking about a proper name. We discussed all sorts of things, and after a while it was clear that we were going to name our product after an animal. But which one? After several hours of discussion Gisela said: "Why not call it IGEL?". This German word for hedgehog is pronounced exactly like the English word EAGLE, so I picked it up and said "Hey, that's a great name! And it is also an acronym, because it can be taken as the short form of Easily Applicable Graphical Layout Editor!". And what makes it even better is that this acronym also works in German, where it stands for Einfach Anzuwendender Grafischer Layout Editor. So out of a misunderstanding we finally came up with a product name that is now known worldwide:
The EAGLE Layout Editor
